Roulette has been involved in the media and in films quite a lot over the years, with story lines based around the highs and lows experienced at the roulette table. With roulette easily being one of the most popular casino games found at the casino, it comes as no surprise that there are a number of gamblers betting great amounts of money in the hopes of getting lucky, leaving behind many tales to be told from the roulette wheel.

Roulette is a popular casino and gambling game which name means “small wheel” in French. It consists of a wheel, a ball and a table labeled with apportioned boxes comprising numbers in non sequential order. The player will choose a number or a set of numbers, the color or whether the number is odd or even.

Once the bets are placed, the ball will be released on the direction that counters the spinning wheel. The winner is the one who placed the bet on where the ball stopped. Because roulette is very famous, some players became eminent as well.

They are notably to many because of what they did in this game. Here are some of them:

Joseph Jaggers

Joseph Jaggers was a British engineer, distant cousin to Sir Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and one of the many holders of the title “The Man Who Broke the Bank at the Monte Carlo“. With the help of his six clerks, they kept an eye on all the wheels at the Monte Carlo Casino until they discovered one with a significant bias. By rearranging the wheels, they manage to confuse Jaggers for a few games, until he found his wheel again. By the end of the contest, Jaggers walked away with two million francs, a number that would amount to around 3,250,000 pounds in 2005.

Ashley Revell

The most recent example of instant fame through daring and guts comes from Ashley Revell, who sold all his possessions, from his house to his clothes, to play the devil’s game in Las Vegas. In 2004, he sold all his assets including his clothing to buy US$135,300 to the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas. He placed it all on “Red” in a double-or-nothing bet. Luckily, the ball stopped on Red 7 and he won $270,600.

He doubled his money from $135,000 to $270,600 in a single bet on red. This is just a short list of the many amazing and gutsy moments in roulette history. Given the right moment, the right bet and the right time, anyone could become a part of the devil’s game – as long as they had the guts. Ashley Revell celebrated the luck with friends and family. Many people wanted to see Revell try it again but instead he walked away with a smile and even tipped the dealer $600.

Charles Wells

In March of 2004 the craziest bet ever made news across the country. Another man who holds the title of breaking the bank at the Monte Carlo is Charles Wells, a reputed con artist and a gambler. In no more than eleven hours, Charles Wells went on an unprecedented lucky streak, gaining approximately a million francs. Later on, private detectives would be unable to determine what system or tactics or cheat the Wells used.

Charles Wells then assigned the credit to a lucky streak – an incredibly lucky streak as at one point, he won twenty three out of thirty successive spins of the wheel. The song “The Man Who Broke the Bank at the Monte Carlo”, made by Fred Gilbert and popularized by Charles Coborn, was written to honor the momentous achievement and cemented the con artist’s place in history.

Lola

Lola is a lead star in the film Run, Lola, Run. She used every money she had to buy a 100-marked chip. She placed her bet on 20 and won. She let her money ride on 20 and she won again until she reached the total winning of 129,600 marks. More than enough of what her boyfriend needs to pay his boss the money he owed. There is exactly 1369-to-1 against chance to have two consecutive wins on a European Roulette.

Johnny Hooker

The man was played by Robert Redford in the film The Sting. In the 1973 film, he nearly lost all of his money in just one bet because he played against a rigged roulette wheel.
