First Round Draft Talks Between Dallas Cowboys and Dez BryantIt’s that time of year again as NFL teams start negations with their draft picks from the first round. The goal is to get players into the training camps to start preparations for the 2010 NFL match-ups. Dez Bryant is the first round draft pick for the Dallas Cowboys and negotiations between them started on Tuesday. Bryant was made the number one selection for the Cowboys from the 14th overall pick of the draft. Bryant is known for being the best wide receiver in the Big 12 especially when he played with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. His record is 19 touchdowns and 87 exceptions for 1,480 yards. He has also run two punts for touchdowns. To his acclaim, Bryant has a Wide Receivers Trophy which he received from the College Football Performance Awards committee. So his numbers should be set with the Best Rookie Receivers in the league according to the NFL player proposition lines. Bryant had an unfortunate incident last year when it was learned that he had a conversation with NFL Network commentator, Deion Sanders, which he did not fully divulge to the NCAA. This was a violation of an NFL bylaw. For this, he was disqualified from the 2009 season. Bryant was ruled ineligible for the 2009 season in October after he violated a NCAA bylaw. At the time, it was thought that Bryant’s chances for winning the Heisman Trophy were very good. However, his disqualification meant that potential wasn’t realized. The Cowboys were willing to take a chance with Sanders after discussions with them, and he was picked in the first round. Being the 14th pick may be a good sign for Bryant as Peria Jerry, who was the 24th pick last year has now signed a guaranteed $7.55 million of that contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Another player in a similar position is Percy Harvin. Harvin was the fourth receiver taken up, and is now signed up with the Minnesota Vikings. His contract is for a guaranteed $8.5million. The renowned sports agent, Eugene Parker, represents Bryant and Michael Crabtree. Crabtree has signed a $32million contract with the San Francisco 49ers after being the 2nd receiver taken in 2009. He had to wait a while for this contract, which lasts for 6 years. The offer was only made in October by the 49ers, giving him the amount and length of time for which he had originally negotiated. Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, has stated that even though Parker represents several players signed up to different teams, there would be no problems signing any players to the team. This comes as deals have been reached between the Cowboys and other clients of Parker’s such as Mike Jenkins, Felix Jones and Anthony Spencer. Interestingly, the Cowboys have been drawn at +125 odds as favourites to win the NFC East Division by USA SportsBooks. They are also set to win the Super Bowl XLV at odds of +1000. |
