Since 1930’s, we saw film merges gambling, poker and other casino games all in one in the movie Gambling Lady by Barbara Stanwyck and the new entry of today Casino Royale, inspired by James Bond series acted by Daniel Craig as 007.

The Cincinatti Kid (1965)

Starred by Steve McQueen, Eric “The Kid” Stone is up against Lancey Howard, a veteran card shark, played by Edward G. Robinson. Some critics claim that the plot of the film is based on Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale novel, the first in the James Bond series, which has now also become the newest James Bond film, after Die Another Day, which came out in 2002.

The Odd Couple (1968)

This charming and hilarious film is anything but Odd. Both Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are simply delightful in their portrayals of Felix and Oscar. Come to think of it, Felix and Oscar have got to be one of the greatest film couples of all time in terms of sheer comic ability. Also, Neil Simon was one of the best film writers of his time and probably even of all time. All of the special features really do make this DVD a must-have when it comes to fans of this movie or anyone who likes a good movie to begin with. I recommend this as a film you can’t miss the chance to put in your movie library.

The Sting (1973)

Acted by a great teamed duo, Paul Newman and Robert Redford as a pair of con artist trying to pull the greatest con of their lives. After Henry Gondorf (Newman) and John Hooker (Redford) spot Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw), a high-stakes gambler during a poker game, they come up with very complex and ingenious methods of manipulating him into placing a huge sure bets on fixed horse races.

The movie is intricate and the plot is entangled yet easy to follow. It shows the world of horse races, poker, schemes, money and the great thrill of the bet, as well as the perhaps even greater thrill of pulling of a sting of such proportions.

Director Robert Altman, a real serious gambler pulled off one of the most honest and bitterly funny films about the compulsive rush and irresponsibility of the life. George Segal and Elliot Gould pair up to hit the casinos and the backroom poker rooms. In one scene they make a drunken bet about naming the seven dwarves (Dumbo). In another, they are held up at gun point, give the mugger half their winnings and bet him that’s all they have. He runs. They win.

I suppose this movie is a celebration of gambling. It’s a movie that avoids as much as possible any simplified Freudian explanations. I say up to a point, because the ending has the effect of making us think back over everything we’ve seen earlier. To win at poker or anything else can sometimes be as devastating as losing.

HoneyMoon in Vegas (1992)

Nicolas Cage, playing the role of Jack Singer has a bad case of feet as he loses her girlfriend Betsy (Jessica Parker) for the weekend when his straight flush is beat by James Caan’s higher straight flush. Fortunately, there’s no any form of cheating in the movie but the Singer acts isn’t that bright because it ended the story giving his crazy antics from Hawaii back to Vegas just to get Betsy Back.

Maverick (1994)

Maverick, which is played by Mel Gibson, travels with the original Maverick, James Garner, and Jodie Foster to the biggest poker tournament of the day — a riverboat five-card draw winner takes all contest.

This comic cowboy picture finds our fast-talking, hard-gambling hero surviving many adventures while trying to come up with enough money to play in a high-stakes poker game.

Its a fun film that captures the old-west image of back-alley bars, cowboys, and cards although it didn’t exactly shows anyone how to play poker.

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
